Academy News: Brooklyn Raines Shines at 14 U.S. BNT Mini-Camp

January 23, 2019

Barca Residency Academy U-15 midfielder Brooklyn Raines put on a show at his first ever U.S. Youth National Team Camp.

Raines, 13, attended the U.S. Soccer U-14 BNT West Regional Identification Mini-Camp, that took place from January 17 to 21 in Carson, California at the Dignity Health Sports Park. It was the first of three YNT U-14 Talent ID Regional Mini-Camps that marked the beginning of U.S. Soccer’s new YNT U-14 T.I.D. Program. The objective of the program is to introduce a larger base of top talents at the U-14 age group into the scouting funnel of the older U-15 to U-20 YNTs.

During the camp, 80 players from the four defined scouting areas that make up the West Region (LA, North Cal, Northwest and Southwest) were divided into four 20-player teams. The teams combined on the first day of camp for a day of group training and competed in a round- robin of competition on the 18th, 19th and 21st.

Raines and the Southwest Select team finished the event undefeated beating LA Select 3-1, North Cal 1-0 and Northwest Select 2-1 with Raines scoring two game-winning goals.

Raines’ game-winning goal on Saturday against North Cal came in the final minute of the game when Raines scored with an acrobatic bicycle kick to edge North Cal 1-0. He scored his second game-winner on Monday against Northwest Select with a terrific tally off a corner kick with the clearance bouncing out to the top of the 18-yard-box. Raines struck the ball perfectly as it hit off the post and settled into the net to put Southwest Select up 2-1 over North Select late in the match.

Top Drawer Soccer’s J.R. Eskilson was in attendance for Monday’s competitions and tabbed Raines as a camp standout. “Raines’ goal was the best of the day,” said Eskilson. “It showed his technical prowess to strike the ball cleanly off the bounce on the volley. He was also a standout in the midfield as he made a number of passes into the attacking third when he was moved into the No. 10 role.”
