Academy News: Ten Seniors Sign National Letter of Intent

February 6, 2019

On Tuesday, February 5 – Ten Barça Residency Academy seniors signed their NCAA National Letters of Intent (NLI) to play Division I athletics and further their education in college. The signees included:

Cameron Fisher – University of North Carolina
Frank Daroma – University of California, Santa Barbara
Djibril Doumbia – Old Dominion University
Matthew Hoppe – San Diego State University
Roberto Molina – University of California, Irvine
Jose Olmos – Old Dominion University
Christian Ortiz – Oregon State University
Carter Payne – University of Michigan
Jaden Strumeier – University of North Carolina, Wilmington
Musa Yansaneh – University of California, Santa Barbara

This group of seniors has played a vital role in shaping Barca Residency Academy into the elite academy that it is today. Eight of the ten signees joined Barca Residency Academy last season in the academy’s inaugural year. During the inaugural season, the U-17 team that featured six of the signees made a historical playoff run and placed third in the U.S. Soccer Development Academy Championships.

This group of players makes up the core of the now U-19 team who is currently ranked No. 5 in the nation by Top Drawer Soccer and is projected to make another deep run in the DA Playoffs.

The U-19s have not only set a high standard for on the field performance but they have also set a precedent for off the field excellence. The group as a whole currently holds over a 3.2 GPA and weekly participates in community service/outreach events. Many of them hosted by Arizona State Prep Academy National Honors Society President and University of North Carolina, Wilmington signee – Jaden Strumeier.

The signing ceremony and banquet was held at the Francisco Grande Hotel and Golf Resort. The signees were joined by their coaches, academy staff, teachers, teammates, family and friends.

The NCAA’s National Letter of Intent (NLI) is a binding agreement between a prospective student-athlete and an NLI member institution. By signing an NLI, the student-athlete agrees to attend the institution full-time for one academic year, while the institution agrees to provide athletics financial aid for one academic year. Congratulations to all ten student-athletes!
