Academy Recap: Barça Residency Academy U-19s win 2019 Presidents’ Day Tournament

The Barça Residency Academy Pre-Academy teams (U-19, U-18 U-17, U-16 and U-15) competed in the four-day SC del Sol Presidents’ Day Tournament (PDT) that took place February 15-18 in Scottsdale, Arizona.
The No. 1 Arizona state ranked Barça Residency Academy U-19s were brilliant on the pitch and were crowned the undefeated (3-0-1) champions of the Presidents’ Day Tournament after a 4-0 shutout win over New Mexico Rush in the tournament final.
The U-17s played exceptionally well and advanced to the championship with an undefeated 3-0 record in the group stage. They fell to Rio Rapids SC in the 13th round of a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw in regulation. The U-16s placed third with a 3-1 record, the U-15s went 2-2 and placed fourth and the U-18s finished the tournament with a strong 3-1 win over Rush Soccer – Colorado.
Presidents’ Day Tournament (Scottsdale, Arizona)
The U-19s kicked off the Presidents’ Day Tournament on Friday, February 15th with a strong performance against Preston’s College (Preston, England), defeating them 5-2 with two goals by Frank Daroma and single goals by: Patrick Zupic, Jesus “Chewy” Virgen and Rodolfo Ramirez.
The U-19 battled to a 0-0 draw with CCV Stars (Arizona) on Saturday before defeating Rio Rapids SC (New Mexico) 3-1 on Sunday with goals by Brian Rodriguez, Tarek El Daly and Jesus “Chewy” Virgen. With an undefeated 2-0-1 record, the U-19s advanced to the tournament finals where they defeated New Mexico Rush 4-0. Goalkeeper Gerald “Lalo” Ramos held NM Rush scoreless while Frank Daroma scored a hat-trick in the second half to lead their team to a shutout victory.

The U-17s were the Presidents’ Day Tournament Runner-Up and kicked off the tournament on Friday, February 15th with a 1-0 win over Madison 56ers (Wisconsin). On Saturday, the U-17s defeated Synergy FC (Illinois) 3-0 with goals by Liam Hogg, Sayer Frontella and Chaitanya Kaktikar. They routed Sporting Omaha 2-0 with goals from Sam Danner and Dylan Akau to advance to the PDT championship with three shutout wins under their belt.
The Championship game kicked off on Monday at Reach 11 Sports Complex in rainy conditions. Barça Residency Academy opened the scoring in the 30th minute from a corner kick that was headed past the keeper by Ethan Sogocio. Barça enjoyed a 1-0 lead at the interval and created a few scoring opportunities early in the second half with combination on the right side between Zishim Bawa and Luka Polic. Rio Rapids equalized in the 75th minute from a corner kick, making it 1-1. The score remained 1-1 at the end of regulation and the champion was decided in a penalty shootout that ended in the 13th round in favor of Rio Rapids FC.
The U-16s placed third with a 3-1 record after defeating Rio Rapids 4-0 in the third-place match. The U-15s placed fourth with a 2-2 record after falling to Phoenix Rising FC in the third-place match after a 3-3 draw was decided in a penalty shootout that resulted in a 5-4 win for Phoenix Rising FC. The U-18s dropped their first three games of the tournament but finished strong with a 3-1 win over Rush Soccer – Colorado.
