Academy Recap: U-16s Undefeated at Surf College Cup Showcase

All of the Pre-Academy teams were in action last weekend over the Thanksgiving break. The U-16s, U-17s and U-19s competed in the San Diego Surf College Cup Showcase while the U-15s and U-18s took part in the Las Vegas Classic.
They won three of three games while scoring nine goals and conceding just one. They shutout Rush Academy – Canada (2-0) and San Diego Surf (4-0) before defeating Athletico Santa Rosa 3-1 on the final day of the showcase. Forward Ronan Kratt scored a third of the team’s goals during the showcase, netting a hat-trick against Surf. Defenders Luke Husakiwsky, David Cordes and Moises Mondragon did well on the backline and goalkeeper Danis Cajic kept a clean sheet in the first two games of the showcase before conceding one goal in the final minutes of the third game.
The U-17’s battled adversity in San Diego and finished the showcase 0-3 but showed several positive moments throughout the weekend.
The U-19s tied in all three of their games, 0-0 vs. San Diego Surf, 1-1 vs. Santa Clara Sporting and 2-2 vs. Rio Rapids SC. Against Santa Clara Sporting, Santa Clara’s lone goal was scored within the first five minutes of the game from a Barça Academy mistake that left the goalkeeper exposed. Barça Academy leveled the score before halftime and had several chances to put the game away late in the second half but couldn’t find the back of the net. This was the same for the following game against Rio Rapids, they conceded two goals early from mistakes, equalized before halftime but couldn’t pull away in the second half.
In Las Vegas, the U-15s had positive results beating Las Vegas Soccer Academy 14-2, Colorado Mountain Region 7-1 and drawing 1-1 with Great Basin. Their only defeat was a 1-0 loss to Boca Jrs who went on to play in the tournament final.
The U-18s finished the Las Vegas Classic with a 0-4 record and will look to improve during the next tournament.
The Pre-Academy teams will now prepare to compete in the 2018 Men’s College Cup Youth Showcase that will take place December 7-9 in Santa Barbara, California.
