Barça Academy in the Community
I Pour Life – Ethiopian Project
April 12, 2018
On Tuesday, April 10 a group of Barça Academy players and staff traveled to Grand Canyon University (GCU) and teamed up with I Pour Life – Texas, a nonprofit organization who’s mission is to develop and provide people with the tools needed to become self-sufficient. Together, Barça Academy and I Pour Life GCU students organized, packaged and shipped 70 cartons of donated soccer gear, clothes and cleats to Ethiopia where it will then be distributed by the Ethiopian National Soccer Team to the children of the I Pour Life Orphanage in Ethiopia.
“It was personally rewarding for me to see the boys working hard while packing those duffel bags,” said Barça Academy Director of Residence Life, Gwen Brogley. “It is my sincere hope that this experience will stick with [the boys] far beyond their time here at Barça Academy”.
On this trip, Barça Academy student-athletes were also given a guided tour of the GCU campus and attended the GCU vs. Arizona baseball game. “Having the chance to watch the game with the boys was rewarding, as athletes they sometimes forget what it’s like to sit among the crowd and feel that positive energy,” said Brogely.
“All in all, it was a blessing to partner with I Pour Life – Texas and GCU for a unique volunteer opportunity for the Barça Academy student-athletes. Not only did we have the opportunity to tour GCU’s cutting edge facilities but we were able to work alongside their driven students. It was a phenomenal experience for our boys to give back to the community while personally benefiting from being on a college campus. It is nice for them to sample what they are working hard for not just in the classroom but on the pitch as well. “
