Barça Residency Academy Sweeps SC Del Sol; Entire Academy Goes Undefeated

RECAP

Casa Grande, Ariz – Barça Residency Academy recorded it’s best weekend of the year with all Academy teams going undefeated (6-0-3) through nine games, scoring 30 goals while allowing seven. The MLS NEXT teams kicked off the weekend on Saturday with a perfect 4-0 sweep of SC del Sol. The U-15s shut out del Sol 3-0, the U-16s defeat them 2-1, the U-17s won by a score of 3-1, and the U-19s concluded the day with a powerful 4-0 shutout win.

The Pre-Academy teams combined for a weekend record of 2-0-2 highlighted by a 7-0 and 6-0 shutout wins by the U-18PA and U-16PA teams respectively.

The weekend was capped off on Sunday with a UPSL thriller against Olympians FC that resulted in a 2-2 draw behind heroics from Diego Luna.

Barça Residency Academy U-15 vs. SC del Sol (MLS NEXT)

The Barça Residency Academy U-15s earned their first win of the season with a 3-0 shutout of SC del Sol. Ryan Rivas scored the opening goal and Zack Smuck netted his second brace of the season, that’s five goals in three games for the youngster.

Barça Residency Academy U-16s secured their second consecutive MLS NEXT win, pulling out ahead of SC del Sol by a score of 2-1 after conceding the first goal of the match in the 12th minute. Jacobo Betancourt leveled the score in the 31st minute and Johnathan Gamez capped it off with a late second half goal to secure three points for the U-16s.

Barça Residency Academy U-17 vs. SC del Sol (MLS NEXT)

Barça Residency Academy U-17s advanced to a perfect 3-0 on the season after a 3-1 win over SC del Sol with goals by Abel Salazar (4’), Luca Sowinski (17’), and Korede Osundina (48’). Salazar has scored at least one goal in three consecutive games while Sowinski and Osundina have scored in the last two games.

Barça Residency Academy U-19 vs. SC del Sol (MLS NEXT)

Barça Residency Academy U-19s improved to a perfect 3-0 with their third shutout win of the season.  Takumi Ikeda who has been on fire netted a first half brace, his second brace of the season, has now scored in three consecutive games. Diego Luna, who has also scored in all three games for the U-19s, added a goal in the 44th minute for his fourth of the season and Dante Williams broke through with his first goal of the season in the 89th minute.

Barça Residency Academy Pre-Academy Results – Arizona Advanced Leagues

Barça’s Pre-Academy teams continued with Arizona Advanced League action over the weekend and combined for a weekend record of 2-0-2.

U-18 vs. RSL-AZ South | 6-0 W | Goals: Nicholas Arze (2), Stone Watring, Kevin Meza, Abhinandan Rajaiyan(2), Osvaldo Fuentes.

Sunday, October 4

U-16 vs. Phoenix Brazas | 6-0 W | Goals: Derek Johnson (2), Zac Olsen, Christian Gonzalez, 2 own goals.

Unites States Premier Soccer League

Barça Residency Academy played host to top UPSL Southwest Conference competitor Olympians FC in their home opener on Sunday night. In just their second game in the league, Barça Residency Academy battled to a 2-2 draw with Olympians FC in a highly-competitive evening thriller. Diego Luna opened the scoring in the 4th minute of the game with a PK after being taken down in the box. Barça had a chance to double their advantage in the 18th minute on a give-and-go between Ulysses Martinez and Julian Gaines but Martinez’s attempt missed wide.

Olympians FC equalized in the 23rd minute and took the lead shortly after in the 25th, throwing a one-two punch at Barca midway through the first half.

The battle continued into the second where Barça Residency Academy had two great chances from Julian Gaines and Dante Williams in the 55th and 63rd minute where both attempts sucked the air out of the crowd as they both narrowly missed the goal. The equalizer came in the 88th minute when Diego Luna took a free kick from the edge of the box that stunned the Olympians keeper.

LOOKING AHEAD

The Academy teams will enjoy a two week break from and resume MLS NEXT action on October 24th at Phoenix Rising Academy. The Pre-Academy teams will compete in the 2020 Arsenal Challenge this weekend and the UPLS team will host FireStorm FC at 7:00pm at Grande Sports World – Home of Barça Residency Academy.
