Saturday, May 30 marked MLS NEXT Cup National Championship Day at Zion Bank Stadium in Utah, where Barca Residency Academy’s U16 Homegrown team faced Total Futbol Academy (TFA) in a thrilling title match that will be remembered as one of the most exciting games of the postseason.
The championship showdown had everything—early goals, stunning strikes from distance, dramatic momentum swings, outstanding goalkeeping, and standout individual performances from both sides in front of a roaring crowd.
Barca struck first in the fourth minute through Arman Alagha, who entered the final having scored in three of the team’s previous four playoff matches. The move began with defender Jordan Williams finding Melvin Ramirez-Perez on the flank. Ramirez-Perez beat his defender and delivered a dangerous cross into the box, where Sean de Wet’s initial effort was parried by the goalkeeper. Alagha was first to the rebound and calmly slotted it home to give Barca an early 1-0 lead.
TFA created a few dangerous opportunities later in the first half through striker Daniel Carmona, but Barca controlled much of the possession, generated the better chances throughout the half, and carried a 1-0 advantage into halftime.
The second half, however, turned into an unforgettable spectacle.
Carmona, who would later earn both the U16 Homegrown Division MVP and Golden Boot awards, continued to threaten down the right side. In the 51st minute, he drove forward before laying the ball off to a teammate at the top of the penalty area, who finished past Barca goalkeeper Zach Eynon to level the match at 1-1.
Just six minutes later, Carmona put TFA in front, curling a strike into the net from the right side of the box. Moments later, he produced another heroic moment, unleashing a solo effort from outside the area to give TFA a 3-1 lead in the 58th minute.
Three goals in seven minutes and a two-goal deficit seemed like a devastating blow for Barca Residency Academy, but the squad responded with the same resilience and heart that had carried it through the MLS NEXT Cup Playoffs.
With 15 minutes remaining, Barca regrouped and launched a comeback of its own.
The breakthrough came in the 80th minute when Damien Quinonez brought life back into the match. The ball fell to him nearly 30 yards from goal, and with one touch to set himself, Quinonez unleashed a world-class strike that flew past the goalkeeper and into the back of the net to make it 3-2.
The momentum had shifted.
Just three minutes later, Barca found the equalizer. Off a corner kick, U15 U.S. Youth National Team defender Ethan O’Neil rose above and powered a header home to level the score at 3-3.
The stadium erupted.
Commentators, spectators, and more than 2,500 viewers watching live on YouTube were stunned. What had appeared to be a runaway comeback victory for TFA had suddenly become a deadlocked championship match with just minutes remaining.
Even after being reduced to 10 men, Barca continued to battle, with both teams pushing relentlessly for a game-winning goal.
Ultimately, the championship was decided in stoppage time.
In the 93rd minute, TFA was awarded a penalty kick following a foul inside the box. TFA converted from the spot to reclaim the lead and secure the MLS NEXT Cup National Championship in a dramatic 4-3 victory.
Despite the heartbreaking result, Barca Residency Academy’s U16 Homegrown team capped off a historic season with a national runner-up finish, showcasing the talent, character, resilience, and HEART that defined their remarkable playoff run and reflected the Academy’s core identity.
