Matthew Hoppe Named to USMNT October World Cup Qualifying Roster

Casa Grande, AZ (October 1, 2021) – Barca Residency Academy alumnus Matthew Hoppe has been called to The U.S. Men’s National Team ahead of their next phase of 2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifying. Gregg Berhalter’s 27 player roster will begin reporting to camp this Sunday.

U.S. men’s national team head coach Gregg Berhalter gave an insight into his attack for the October round of World Cup qualifiers, highlighting Matthew Hoppe, Timothy Weah and Luca de la Torre as players who could greatly impact the upcoming matches.

Berhalter explained his decisions to reporters, claiming that he wants to take an “aggressive” approach against Jamaica, Panama and Costa Rica. To do so, he’s named Hoppe, Weah and De la Torre as the most likely to stun opponents with a “vertical” style.

“They speak really highly of him at Mallorca, really impressed with his numbers in training, what he’s been doing. So, I think he can help us again in either position,” said the coach of Hoppe. “At the winger position he gives us this goal threat, this versatility of coming inside and staying wide and going behind.

The USMNT opens the three-match set at home on Thursday, Oct. 7 against Jamaica, the team Hoppe scored his first international goal against to send the U.S. to the Gold Cup Final. The Kickoff will be at Q2 Stadium in Austin is set for 7:45 p.m. ET (ESPN2, Univision, TUDN, Sirius XM). Three days later, the USA travels to face Panama at Estadio Rommel Fernandez in Panama City (6 p.m. ET (Paramount+, UNIVERSO).
