Player Insider: The Ultimate Goal

My name is Abedi “Abel” Godefroid. I’m from a small country in Africa called Burundi. I came to America when I was 6 years old as a refugee on June 1, 2009. Growing up, I had no sibling and I lived with mom and aunts. We lived in a small complex where I met many great people who helped me get through a lot of things in life. I am grateful for these people because they have helped me get to where I am today.

I started playing soccer when I was 9 years old. I played recreation league soccer for 2 years and then played club for about 4 years before joining Barca Residency Academy for the 2018-19 season.

Though soccer I became friends with so many kids who I am still very close with till today. These friends I have met along the way have helped overcome my shyness before I was a very lonely and quiet and didn’t really interact with others well but they helped change that. Through soccer, I learned many valuable lessons that have helped me on and off the pitch.

The reason why I joined Barca Residency Academy is that I believe I will reach new heights with the very well experienced coaches here. They have great guidance to offer which will help me take steps closer to my main goal and passion in life and that is to become a professional soccer player. I want to achieve this so I can make my mom proud. She has helped me and has been there for me when I needed someone. Becoming a professional soccer player would be like paying a little debt payment I owe to her for everything she had gone through and done for me, this is the ultimate goal.
